Calm minds in uncertain times

Takeaway

The polarization of politics in 2025 is causing many to feel anxious. Healthcare professionals can prioritize patient and personal mental well-being by promoting and practicing mindful information consumption.

In 2025, political uncertainty is a major source of anxiety for many. The rapid flow of information, the polarization of opinions, and the ever-shifting political landscape can create a sense of unease. It’s important to remember that while political engagement is important, it’s also crucial to protect the mental well-being of ourselves, patients, colleagues, and others.

Here are five tips for how to manage this anxiety:

1. Consume information strategically.

Instead of constantly scrolling through political feeds, curate your sources. Focus on reputable news organizations. Designate specific times of the day to check for updates and avoid reading the news before bedtime.

2. Note the facts of the current situation and don’t add an additional “story.”

Usually these stories start with “what if . . .” Remember that the mind can fixate on catastrophic outcomes. The facts can be stressful enough. We don’t need to focus on the potential catastrophic outcomes.

3. Focus on what you can control.

Recognize that much of the political landscape is beyond your individual control. Focus your energy on actions you can take, such as engaging in local activism.

4. Practice mindfulness.

Any form of relaxation or mindfulness can turn off the stress response and allow us to think more clearly and effectively. Pause and take a few deep breaths several times a day. Take some time to listen to guided meditations before bed or first thing in the morning. When the mind wanders to stressful thoughts during the day, practice noting the thoughts and returning to the activity you’re engaged in. By doing this, you’re not consumed by worries the entire day.

5. Maintain perspective.

Historical perspective can be helpful. Remember that political landscapes are constantly evolving, and that periods of uncertainty are not unprecedented.

If political anxiety becomes overwhelming, seek professional help. Therapists can provide support and coping strategies for navigating these challenging times.
