My doctor walked in, sat down, and gave me the news.

“You have bipolar disorder,” she said.

I was overcome by a rush of emotions. She explained the game plan moving forward. The first priority was to find a medication combination to manage my bipolar disorder. This took many years. For a long time, I felt like a guinea pig trying this medication and that one. Discouraged is an understatement, but I tried to find hope in the face adversity. My loved ones continually reminded me that, “It will get better.”

Feeling such a loss of control, I sought ways to empower myself. Instead of focusing solely on the medication, I also focused on the basics of my daily life. Here are a few ways I worked to improve the basics of living that may help you mitigate burnout and feel energized to give excellent care to every patient.

1. Make sleep a priority.

Work toward at least eight hours of sleep each night. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning.

2. Exercise regularly.

It doesn’t matter what type, but make sure you enjoy it. Whether it’s walking, jogging, or yoga, have fun!

3. Practice gratitude.

List the things you’re grateful for each morning and/or evening.

4. Eat a balanced diet.

Keep sugar to a minimum.

5. Stay hydrated.

Drink water throughout the day.
