Highlights
Volunteering with Loaves and Fishes Ministry in Baltimore, Maryland, serving hot soup, sandwiches, and fruit from a van to 3,000+ unhoused men and women. We went into shelters with our leader who had been doing this EVERY Satruday night for 30 years. Her dedication and personal connection with the people who she served was inspiring.
Dr. Margaret Chisolm, Johns Hopkins
In college I volunteered at Yale New Haven's Elder Life Program and it inspired me to become a geriatrician!
Dr. Ryan Chippendale, Boston Medical Center
Volunteering at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center as a high school student. Little did I know I would be a doctor at that very same hospital 12 years later as an intern, and now faculty!
Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos, Johns Hopkins
My first “job” volunteering all summer for United Way at age 8. It changed my perspective on my own fortune in life at an early age and helped me develop a heart for service. I attribute that as my first motivator to go into public health and medicine.
Dr. Mariah Robertson, Johns Hopkins
Walking around the fields with a wheel-barrow, looking after and taking time to talk to the rescued racehorses, elderly donkeys, and a couple of grumpy Shetlands at a horse sanctuary.
Dr. Flora Smyth Zahra, Kings College London
In high school I volunteered on election days helping handicapped individuals vote.
Dr. Mike Fingerhood, Johns Hopkins
When my daughter was in high school, she and I taught lacrosse together to a group of underserved young women. It was awesome seeing them pick up the stick and learn to throw and catch. They were hooked!
Dr, Michael Crocetti, Johns Hopkins
I loved volunteering at the Keswick Adult Day Center shortly after graduating from college. I learned the art of winning at Bingo and the dance moves to "Fly Me to the Moon." At the time I was already smitten with the world of Geriatrics but that experience helped confirm why I want to continue being in the presence of older adults.
