My approach to clinical care involves making a dual diagnosis for each patient:
1.) Identification of the problem.
2.) Understanding how that problem affects the patient psychologically and emotionally.
This way, we can identify what to do about the problem, educate patients in the options for treatment and management, and help patients with the emotional and psychological manifestations of the disease process.
One must have considerable knowledge and experience to be able to establish the correct diagnosis and to review all the reasonable options for treatment and management, which requires constant education and study. Since many of my patients have facial defects or injuries, there is always considerable emotional burden associated with the disease process that I seek to alleviate.
