What’s a love story a patient shared with you?

Takeaway

A patient and her husband got married on Halloween. When she died a few months before their 18th Halloween together, he still made sure their house was the most festive on the block.

I see heartfelt stories daily—caregivers and families of my patients with dementia who bring their loved ones to clinic, take notes, organize medications, help with dressing, feeding, and social activities . . . and love unconditionally through it all. #love #family #geriatrics

Lingsheng Li, MD, Johns Hopkins

A patient & her husband got married on Halloween & walked down the aisle as Beauty & the Beast. Every year they would go all-out for this holiday. When she died a few months before their 18th Halloween together, he still made sure their house was the most festive on the block.

Jeffrey Millstein, MD, Penn Medicine

I walked into an exam room to find my patients, a couple approaching their 50th anniversary, holding hands. That image alone was a precious love story.

Scott Wright, MD, Johns Hopkins

Two things come to mind. First, there was a couple who were both my patients for many years. They were so close and connected that they would even coordinate their outfits and dress the same each day.

The second relates to how insanely passionate many individuals are about their dogs. In particular, three of my older patients are so smitten with their dogs that they spend much of our time together sharing stories about their pets and concerns the dog’s health over their own.
