What’s your summer beach read?

Takeaway

No light reads here! Homer, Sontag, Fitzgerald . . . these physicians are making the most of summer reading!

Highlights

"Selected Stories of Robert Walser." (I like cold, strange beaches.)

Leslie Ordal, CGC, Boise State University

"Bird by Bird," by Anne Lamott.

Jeff Millstein, MD, Penn Med

"Notes on Camp," by Susan Sontag. "The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister," by Anne Lister. "The City-State of Boston," by Mark Peterson.

Carl Streed Jr., MD, Boston University Medical Campus

"Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine," explores the relationship between science and religion: “The physicist and novelist’s discursive essays on the mysteries of the physical world are full of wonder and insight.”

Margaret Chisolm, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Not exactly classic "beach read," but looking forward to our town-wide summer reading book: "Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss and the Fight for Trans Equality," by Sarah McBride.

Shannon Scott-Vernaglia, MD, MassGeneral

It might seem counterintuitive, but, "The Butchering Art," by Dr. Lindsey Fitzharris, is a fascinating and page turning if somewhat hair raising look at medical and surgical training in the 19th century, with a focus on pioneer Joseph Lister. Highly recommended!

James Richardson, MD, MPH

"This Side of Paradise," by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Sam Kant, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

"The Doctors Mayo," by Helen Clapesattle is a beautifully written book about the Mayo brothers.

Mays Ali, MD, Mayo Clinic

Just one? That’s torture. . . . Maybe it’s the state of politics at the moment, but feel in need of escape, so if it’s one it would be "The Odyssey."

Flora Smyth Zahra, MA Clin Ed, D Rest Dent RCS, FHEA, Kings College, London

I'm in the middle of Deborah Levy's "Cost of Living," a beautiful meditation on life upended.

D. Muthulingam, MD, Yale University

It gives insight into the institution’s values and why it operates the way it does. I read it before I started fellowship and felt so inspired.

The epithets – coming home – Penelope and their beautiful bed, the dog – just love it, oh and the poor maids…

I just moved to the Midwest two weeks ago, so I’m not sure if there are beaches? I will look into it report back!
