What’s a new skill you learned this spring?

Morning on the Clinch River in eastern Tennessee. Fly fishing has been called "the original social distancing!" A day out on the water practicing this art brings peace to the soul. Photo and copyright by Chase Webber.

Takeaway

Fly fishing, online chess & yoga . . . silver linings to this challenging spring.

Aline Charabaty, MD, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Professionally: learning to Zoom and use Google Docs. Personally: learning to do my own nails!

Mariah Robertson, MD, Johns Hopkins Medicine

I’ve become a LEGO expert because I have two boys who are obsessed! And I learned the names of all of the major characters and ships from Star Wars. Never thought I’d have brain space for this but it’s amazing how it can expand when you love someone with all your heart.

Ashlyn McRae, med student, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Personally, I learned how to train a puppy! I’m looking forward to going back to the wards as a med student and developing new professional skills!

Ambereen Mehta, MD, Los Angeles, CA

Finally put to use the electric piano I bought off a senior resident when I was a resident!

Chase Webber, DO, Vanderbilt University

Fly fishing in eastern Tennessee. “Catch and release” brings peace to the soul during a turbulent spring.

Carl Streed Jr., MD, Boston University Medical Center

I’m actively trying not to forget things . . . I just got back in the clinic this week after a few weeks away and literally thought, “do I still know how to use a stethoscope?”

The answer is yes, but . . . I paused.

Collage! Great way to repurpose things, including used masks.

Margaret Chisolm, MD, Johns Hopkins Medicine

I learned how to transfer art museum-based teaching methods online. Facilitating Visual Thinking Strategies sessions virtually actually offers some benefits not available when teaching in the art museum.

Zackary Berger, MD, Johns Hopkins Medicine

I’m starting to talk to colleagues to try and improve our workplace for the healthcare workers (and in solidarity with them/patients). It’s uncomfortable but necessary.

Yolonda Wilson, PhD, Durham, NC

Online chess lessons!

Seema Gadiwalla, MD, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Personally, I’m practicing mindfulness with the focus on the present. I always keep in mind this quotation: “The past is history, the future is mystery, and the present is a gift.”

Professionally, the new skill is I acquired is working with telemedicine effectively and efficiently and making a virtual visit not feel remote!  I look forward to this new era of being able to have a joyful and gratifying visit with patients remotely.
